Frans B. M. de Waal   [1948]

Academic/Scholar

Professor Frans de Waal has been well known by primatologists for quite a long time, but he only became known to the general public through publications of his extensive studies in primate behavior. Especially his most recent book, “Our Inner Ape”, which explains “why we are what we are”, has received extensive publicity by both the written and electronic media. His most recent book is not the only book that has reported the results of his studies of our closest animal ancestors. He has written several books, listed below, and numerous scientific papers on primate behavior and how similar the behavior of primates is to the behavior of Homo sapiens. At present he is well-known in the scientific field for his studies of conflict resolution, cooperation and cognition in primates.

Frans de Waal was born in the City of s’Hertogenbosch [also: Den Bosch], the Netherlands in 1948. He grew up in Waalwijk and then studied Biology and Zoology at several Dutch universities and received his Ph. D. in 1977 from the University of Utrecht. During and following his doctoral studies at the University of Utrecht, from 1975 to 1981, he completed an extensive study of chimpanzees, using the world’s largest captive colony of chimpanzees at the Arnhem Zoo, the Netherlands. The results of his chimpanzee study were reported in his book, “Chimpanzee Politics”, published in 1982.

In 1981, Professor de Waal moved to the United States to take on a position at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, where he stayed until 1991. While there he continued his studies of primate behavior. During that time, in 1989, he authored, “Peacemaking among Primates”, published by Harvard University Press.

In 1991 Professor de Waal was offered a position at Emory University in Atlanta where he remains until the present. At Emory University he is the C. H. Candler Professor of Primate Behavior in the Department of Psychology. He is also the director of “Living Links”, at the Yerkes National Research Center. De Waal has also been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2004, and a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences since 1993.

His best known publications are the two books referenced above, consisting of “Chimpanzee Politics” and “Our Inner Ape”. His other book or volume publications are listed below. They are:

Peacemaking among Primates”, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1989,

Natural Conflict Resolution”, University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, 2000, with F. Aureli,

The Ape and the Sushi Master”, Basic Books, New York, 2001,

Tree of Origin: What Primate Behavior Can Tell Us about Human Social Evolution”, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 2001,

Animal Social Complexity: Intelligence, Culture, and Individualized Societies”, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 2003, with P. L. Tyack,

My Family Album: Thirty Years of Primate Photography”, University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, 2003,

In addition to the above publications, Professor de Waal has written and published numerous scientific articles in scientific journals and scientific chapters in books. Based on the above Professor Frans de Waal eminently qualifies to be listed among prominent Dutch Americans.

As is usually common with current prominent Dutch Americans there is not much information available about his family and personal interests.
