About the New Netherland Institute

Recognizing the need for consistent financial support for the New Netherland Project, a small group of concerned individuals organized early in 1986 as Friends of the New Netherland Project, a name that was changed in July 1992 to Friends of New Netherland. On December 9, 2005, the Board of Regents of the State Education Department officially approved the change to the even more comprehensive name of New Netherland Institute. These changes reflect the broadening scope of functions and activities, which came about as a consequence of the New Netherland Project's publications and relate to but are not part of the New Netherland Project's primary mission.  The Board of Trustees of the New Netherland Institute, elected by its membership and governed under its By-Laws, meets regularly to oversee the details of all functions and activities. The trustees are supported by an Honorary Board, chaired by the Ambassador of the Netherlands to the United States. It includes the Consul General of the Netherlands, who serves as President, and members of the Dutch and American diplomatic and business communities.

A major function of the New Netherland Institute remains to secure financial support for the New Netherland Project by matching the National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grants and to provide additional funding for the New Netherland Institute's ongoing and future functions and activities. The New Netherland Institute receives significant financial support, all of which is fully tax deductible, from its membership and other interested individuals, as well as from corporations, foundations, and societies in the United States and the Netherlands. The New Netherland Institute is a not-for-profit membership corporation organized under New York State Education Law and is registered with the U.S. Treasury Department as a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organization, see the Institute's latest  Form 990. See the archive for past years. A copy of the Institute's latest annual report may be obtained from the Institute directly or from the Office of the Attorney General, Charities Bureau, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271.
