Membership

Membership history and purpose:

The membership of the New Netherland Institute, first organized in 1986 as Friends of the New Netherland Project and subsequently as Friends of New Netherland, supports the work of the New Netherland Project and the functions and activities of the New Netherland Institute. Significant financial assistance comes directly from membership fees and donations and from government agencies, corporations, foundations, and societies, both in the United States and abroad. The New Netherland Institute is a not-for-profit membership corporation organized under New York State Education Law and is registered with the U.S. Treasury Department as a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organization, see the Institute's latest  Form 990. For past years see the archive. A copy of the Institute's latest annual report may be obtained from the Institute directly or from the Office of the Attorney General, Charities Bureau, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271.

Members, their contributions, and benefits of membership:

Membership composition:

The membership of the New Netherland Institute is open to all and demonstrates a wide diversity of backgrounds, education, and interests. Although some members are, for example, historians, genealogists, or linguists by profession, most have joined because of their interest in areas such as Netherlandic or American colonial history, genealogy, language and literature, and popular or material culture. Some were born in the Netherlands, or are descendants of the early settlers of the eastern seaboard.  Although much of the membership is clustered here, many members reside across the United States, in Canada, and elsewhere, in particular the Low Countries.

Membership fees, donations, and volunteer activities:

These contributions support the work of the Project and the Institute. They ensure that an essential and unique resource, which provides new insights into the early history and culture of one of this country's most important regions, is accessible to scholars and ultimately to the public at large.

Membership benefits:

Individual members receive special invitations to the Rensselaerswijck Seminar and other regularly scheduled and special events, where they have the opportunity to meet others with interests similar to their own; have a free subscription to the Institute's English-language quarterly newsletter De Nieu Nederlanse Marcurius; and new members receive a framable copy of the 1667 Pieter Goos map of New Netherland.

Benefits of the family membership include all of the above. Family members receive single copies per family of the newsletter and invitations to events, which extend to all members of the family.. New family memberships entitle the family to receive one framable copy of the 1667 Pieter Goos map of New Netherland, which will be mailed to the address of record.

Benefits of the organization membership include all those of the individual membership.New organization memberships entitle the organization to receive one copy of the 1667 Pieter Goos map of New Netherland, which will be mailed to the address of record. In addition, at no extra cost, the organization may provide the New Netherland Institute with up to three names and addresses of members of that organization to receive all New Netherland Institute mailings. They will be considered Affiliate Members of the New Netherland Institute. All those associated with the organization are welcome to attend the Seminar and other regularly scheduled and special events.

Non-members may subscribe to the print edition of De Nieu Nederlanse Marcurius @ $ 20.00 per year.
