In England it was 'posset,' in the Netherlands, 'kandeel.' In both cases it was a drink similar to our eggnog, created from eggs, cream, sack wine, sugar, and spices. The drink was often served at weddings or christenings in a vessel such as this tin-glazed earthenware pot, probably made in England.

Help us reach our year-end fundraising goals!

We love that so many new people are becoming interested in New Netherland. This site has seen over 200,000 visitors over the past 12 months, but less than 1% have donated. If you are an exceptional visitor who has already given, we thank you. If you are a future first-time donor, remember that even a small gift can help keep us going for years to come!

Donate on our website, via PayPal, or on Facebook. Thank you for your interest in the New Nethlerland Institute.
