Aaron Van Schaick Cochrane   [1858-1943]

US Congressman

Aaron Van Schaick Cochrane was born in Coxsackie, Green County, NY on March 14, 1858. He graduated from Yale College in 1879. He then studied law and was admitted to the Bar in 1881 and began law practice in Hudson, NY. He served as a city judge in 1887 and 1888 and as a district attorney of Columbia County from 1889 to 1892.

He was elected to the 55th and 56th Congresses and served from March 1897 to March1901. He was elected an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of New York on 1901, and reelected in 1915 and served until 1928.

In 1922 he was designated by Governor Miller as the presiding justice of the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court. He retired from the Bench in 1928 and served as an official referee until 1941.

Aaron Cochrane passed away in Hudson, NY on September 7, 1943 at the advanced age of 85. He was interred in Riverside Cemetery in Coxsackie, NY.

Mr. Cochrane was a nephew of Isaac Whitbeck Van Schaick [1817-1901], also a U.S. Congressman.
