Burt Van Horn   [1823-1896]

US Congressman

Burt Van Horn was born in Newfane, Niagara County, NY on October 28, 1823. He attended Yates Academy in Orleans County and Hamilton College, now Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. There is no mention of a graduation. He became involved in farming and later in textile manufacturing.

He was a Member of the NY State Assembly from 1858 to 1860, and was elected as a Republican to the 37th U.S. Congress and served from March 1861 to March 1863.

Two years later he was again elected to the 39th U.S. Congress and another two years later he was reelected to the 40th U.S. Congress. He served from March 1865 to March 1869. He did not run for the 41st U.S. Congress.

In 1867 he moved from Newfane to Lockport, NY. He resumed farming and also became a money lender. He served as the Collector of Internal Revenue at Rochester, NY from 1877 to 1882.

Burt Van Horn passed away in Lockport, NY on April 1, 1896 at the age of 72. He was interred in Glenwood Cemetery in Lockport, NY.
