Charles Stewart Voorhees   [1853-1909]

US Congressman

Charles Stewart Voorhees was born in Covington, Fountain County, IN on June 4, 1853. He was the son of U.S. Senator Daniel Wolsey Voorhees [1827-1897].  He attended Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN, and graduated from Georgetown College, Washington, DC in 1873.

He studied law and was admitted to the Indiana Bar and began his law practice in Terre Haute, IN. He moved to Washington State in 1882, and settled in Colfax, WA. He was a Prosecuting Attorney for Whitman County, WA from 1882 to 1885.

He was elected to the 49th and the 50th U.S. Congresses and served in Congress from March 1885 to March 1889. He was unable to get elected for another term and resumed his law practice in Colfax, WA. Later he moved to Spokane, WA and practiced law there.

Charles Stewart Voorhees passed away in Spokane, WA on December 26, 1909 at the rather young age of 56. He was interred in Greenwood Cemetery, Spokane, WA.
