Cornelius Plantinga   [1947]

Academic/Scholar

Cornelius Plantinga is the current president of Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he also serves as a professor of systematic theology. He has held his position as president since 2002. Plantinga comes from a rather erudite family. He is the younger brother of Alvin Plantinga, a well known philosopher whose specialty is religion. He is also the brother of Leon Plantinga, a music historian, and of Terry Plantinga, a former CBS news producer. In addition Plantinga is also the uncle of Amy Plantinga Pauw, a theologian.

Plantinga graduated from Calvin College in 1967 with an A.B. degree. He then briefly attended Yale University, but decided to enter Calvin Theological Seminary from where he received his B. D. degree in 1971. After serving as a minister for a period of time, he returned to study theology at Princeton University’s Theological Seminary, where he also taught theology from 1976 to 1978. While teaching at Princeton he continued his studies and graduated with a Ph. D. degree in theology, magna cum laude, in 1982.

Following his doctoral studies at Princeton Plantinga taught at Fuller Theological Seminary in 1985 and in 1987, and at Regent College in 1997. From 1996 to 2002 he served as the Dean of the Chapel at Calvin College. And following that position, he became the President of Calvin Theological Seminary where he still serves as of this writing.

In addition to many articles in the religious press, he has also published the books listed below.

“Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin”, Eerdmans, in 1995

“Engaging God’s World: A Christian Vision of Faith, Learning and Living”, Eerdmans, in 2002
