Henry Clay Van Voorhis  [1852-1927]

Henry Clay Van Voorhis was born in Nashport, Muskingum County, OH on May 11, 1852. He attended Denison University, Granville, OH, but there is no report that he graduated. He studied law and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1874. Instead of practicing law, he attended Cincinnati Law School for a year and graduated in 1875. He then began his law practice in Zanesville, OH.

He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884 and in 1916. From 1885 to 1893 he was the President of the Citizen’s National Bank of Zanesville, OH.

He was elected as a Republican to the 53d and to the five following U.S. Congresses and served in the Congress from March 1893 to March 1905. He decided not to run for another congressional session.

He again became President of the Citizen’s National Bank of Zanesville, OH in 1905. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Marietta, OH College.

Henry Clay Van Voorhis passed away in Zanesville, OH on December 12, 1927 at the age of 75. He was interred in Greenwood Cemetery, Zanesville, OH.
